Situated in the heart of Hobart, the historic Botanical Gardens are home to an impressive collection of plants from all over the world. Covering around 13.5 hectares / 33 acres, Hobart's Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens has more than 6,000 exotic and native species, and impressive landscaped gardens - including an authentic Japanese garden complete with maples, bamboo, ponds and stone lanterns.

Other attractions at Hobart's Botanic Gardens include mature trees and shrubs, flower borders, a well-tended vegetable garden, a collection of plans originating from China, a large conservatory, walking trails, seating areas, picnic spots, a sub-Antarctic plant house emulating inhospitable cold and windy conditions, and a popular visitors' centre, with many activities for children. The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens were founded in 1818, making them the second oldest botanic gardens in the whole of Australia.
